Introduction

In 2001 I decided that I didn't have quite enough personal debt racked up. Sure, I had a mortgage and a car payment, student loans, furniture loans, and a bit of credit card debt, but nothing financially debilitating. I figured an international journey paid for strictly with credit cards was a good way to add to my consumer debt. So I booked a flight to London and went on my first trip outside North America. Sure it was financially irresponsible, but I looked at it as a mental health expense. And a grand or so on the credit card is probably still better for me than the amount of heroin it would have taken to otherwise forget about my job for a week or so.

I figured London would be a good place for my first cross-Atlantic trip because I heard that they speak English there. Also, I dig girls with English accents, and I figured England would be the place to find such girls. Also, I’ve always been a bit interested in British history—from Henry VIII to Shakespeare to the Spice Girls. And any country that gave us the geniuses from Monty Python was surely worth a visit.
